What does hair surgery in Alicante consist of?
The hair surgery in Alicante that we perform at the Instituto Capilar is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows for improved hair density in patients with different types of alopecia. The technique of choice is hair transplant with micrografts, in which follicular units (FUs) are transplanted from the occipital region (genetically more “resistant” to alopecia) and implanted in the areas affected by alopecia.
Hair transplant as therapy
Hair transplant in Alicante is a therapeutic tool that should never replace medical treatment, but rather be used as a complement to it.
Hair transplant surgery is a surgical technique performed in an operating room under local anesthesia, and the entire process is carried out on the same day. It is an outpatient procedure that does not require hospitalization, and the patient’s medical recovery is quick.
The transplanted micrografts initially appear similar to short hairs with a scab, and starting around two weeks after the surgery, the hair shafts will begin to shed. From around 5–6 months, the new follicles start to grow, and the patient will progressively see an improvement in hair density up to one year, which is when the final result is usually visible.
Types of Hair Micrograft Surgery in Alicante
There are two techniques for performing hair transplant with micrografts: the strip technique (also known as “FUSS” or “strip” technique) and the FUE technique (follicular unit extraction).
- Strip Technique
It involves removing a strip of skin from the occipital region, and the defect is closed with direct trichophytic suture. This technique does not require shaving the hair, but special care must be taken with patients who wear their hair very short, as the scar in the donor area may be visible. - FUE Technique
It involves extracting the follicular units one by one from the occipital region using small punches of 0.70–1 mm. For this, it is necessary to shave the donor area of the patient, but not the recipient area. The small defects left where the follicular units are removed heal by secondary intention and are barely noticeable. This is currently the most commonly used technique.
Once the follicular units have been obtained, the next step is implantation in the recipient area. To perform the implantation, incisions are first made (small holes where the FUs will be inserted). Then the previously extracted FUs are inserted.
